I saw this at the independent cinema on the 5th of February, 2025.
I’m not even joking, one of the best and funniest films I’ve ever seen.
It’s about a guy called Jean, who is stuck in the snowy wilderness and has to learn to survive by trapping rabbits and beavers and trading them for tools and stuff, and on the way discovering a secret portal/tunnel network, interrupting the beavers’ space program, being tracked, caught, prosecuted and punished by beaver Holmes and Watson, and courting the daughter of the trading guy.
It’s in black and white, there is no dialogue (but excellent sound design), and it was made on a tiny budget so the VFX consists of cardboard and hand sketches, and the beavers and dogs and rabbits are literally just some guys in mascot costumes, and it has a higher gag density than anything I’ve ever seen.
Literally the entire cinema was laughing out loud for most of it.
It’s unfortunately got a really small release (the actors, who were present in the cinema in their costumes! were touring the film, which I’ve never heard of) but I’m so glad I went to see it completely blind. Some of the audience members were seeing it for like the sixth or seventh time, it’s absolutely going to be a cult classic.
