I watched this on the 29th of March, 2025, on Netflix.
It’s a comedic, almost farcical, action movie set in the UK, about a pair of sisters. The younger, the protagonist, is a schoolgirl aspiring to be a stuntwoman; the older is an art student who dropped out of uni. She meets an older guy, a doctor, at a high society party, and starts going out with him. Her sister, who naturally assumes the guy is an absolute demon and out to destroy all that is good in the world, enacts a series of slapstick-comedic schemes with her best friends to prove what he is to her sister, and break off their impending arrangement.
These schemes are the heart of the movie, there’s such a wonderful rapport between the besties and they’re really funny and rather cringe-inducing.
And then, of course, it’s revealed that there is something sinister about the guy. The suspense is built up really well, the older sister won’t believe her, everyone’s against her, there’s an absolutely hilarious ‘punishment’ scene (for breaking into their house) where she’s forced to endure a spa day with the guy’s mum, and then.... massive rug pull and (spoilers) it turns out that the guy actually scanned the bodies of tens of women, selected the sister, and planned to artificially impregnate her with a clone of his mother so she could relive the childhood she never got because she was married off so young?????
Huh?
Deranged plot notwithstanding, a really funny and action-packed movie (amazing stunt scenes, really cool) with over-the-top drama and painfully accurate pastiches of British-South Asian life.
Turns out I forgot I wrote this review and wrote another one:
Big Big Fan. It’s an action-comedy about a pair of sisters in London. They’re both Pakistani, and the older one is getting married after a whirlwind romance to a 32-year-old geneticist. The younger one, an aspiring stuntwoman, is convinced he’s a terrible person and pulls off a set of increasingly unhinged plots to derail the wedding with her two schoolfriends, and we’re led to believe it’s just a case of sisterly worry, until an absolutely insane rug-pull and a plot point where I was like huh??? who came up with this and pitched it, this is unhinged
but it’s SO GOOD like wow. the action sequences are a proper homage to bollywood, being detached from the real world in stakes and damage, over-the-top action, and stunts like crazy, and the rest of the movie does a really great portrayal of sisterly relationships, british-pakistani households, school, future worries, adulting, insecurity, tiger moms, and mummy’s boys.
also? the main actress is stellar? not just the fight scenes, she acted well throughout the movie (bit over-the-top but that’s the vibe), and there’s also a bollywood dance sequence where she does admirably well for a teenager who hasn’t trained long, and she incorporated martial arts elements in a fluid way throughout. she’s also like so funny.
it’s not like an artsy movie, and i don’t think it’s got the depth to be a cult classic, but it’s just a great film and well worth a watch.
