I watched this at the independent cinema on the 3rd of March, 2025. It’s a real classic, with some of the stars of the Golden Age: Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, and Fred MacMurray. It’s a romcom at heart, with some more serious bits.
It’s about an insurance worker who allows his seniors the use of his apartment for their affairs. He fancies an elevator operator in his building, so he asks her out, unaware that she’s involved with the top dog, with whom she’s been to his apartment! He tells her he’s divorcing his wife and doesn’t; she becomes suicidal and is nursed back to health by Jack; she goes back to the manager; he quits the company when he’s asked for his apartment again; and she realises whom she truly likes. It ends with a really iconic line from Shirley: Jack tells her he “absolutely adores” her, to which she smiles in his eyes, and says “shut up and deal”.
Really good movie! Definitely older, with some odd expressions, timing, and some dated slapstick, but real charm, a great script, and actors at the top of their game.
