The Holdovers

Watched this in the independent cinema on the 11th of February, 2024.

It’s about a trio of characters kept at a private boarding school over Christmas: a teacher, a student, and a janitor/cook at the school. What a lovely movie. I adored the colour scheme and film grain and cinematography, but the real star was the brilliant characterisation which made all of the characters be real and believable and totally different and yet make us root for all of them.

It was also wickedly funny, with tone switching being used to great effect, as well as the actors being wonderfully expressive with great comic timing. It was perhaps a bit overlong, but it didn’t drag, and the ending was so bittersweet you couldn’t help thinking it was all worth it.
